My friend’s laptop can get a strong connection with wireless internet signals that my laptop struggles to connect to at all, or drops after a few seconds. What is that feature called and how do I identify laptops for sale that have it?

Any new laptop will have a good antenna, like my laptop is: 802.11b/g WIRELESS LAN

There are different standards depending on the age of your laptop
802.11n is the newest with 802.11g next down. and 802.11b
If you have "b" wifi and your friend "g" he would be faster.
