what can i do to not cause static electricity when working on computer hardware?
plug computer into power supply and switch off at wall. that will keep you earthed. Then ensure you have one hand in contact with the metal of the case at all times (to maintain earth through your body).

Go to an electronics supply store (like Radio Shack) and purchase a grounding strap, this is something you wear that prevents you from building up static electricity.
If you can’t find that, make sure you touch something that is grounded always before you touch the computer hardware – for example, a water pipe in your house, etc.

not wear wool socks.
ground yourself often every 5 mins or so by touching the case or power supply. idk you have to be pretty dumb to wreck a mobo or other components by ESD. good luck.

Don’t wear socks. Just don’t put any magnetic stuff around the system. You may find some stuff around the system if you look closely. Putting magnetic stuff around the system wrecks the motion of the computer and effects how it runs.

Touch the metal case of the computer with both hands. This will discharge any static electricity in you. If you are on carpet, don’t move your feet back and forth. This may build up the static electricity. If you have a static bag (computer boards usually come in these bags) touch the outside of the bag with both hands but it really is better to touch the case with both hands.
