So what is missing in Internet Connection Sharing ???

Well it is not a big deal, in case I’ve already shared files and folders. But let me just warn you that sharing the connection means, technically half of the total bandwidth speed. But sharing it within the 2 computers/Laptops will result in much more loses. bu the details you provided are not sufficient to guide you step by step procedure. but in short. First of all, You need to assign IP addresses manually to both of the laptops (just assign manual IPs to the LAN connection connecting these 2 Laptops. Now on the Laptop-2(without internet connection), try to ping the Ip address of the Laptop-1 (with internet) in gateway of laptop-2, put the Ip of the Laptop-1. Note down the DNS address from Laptop-1’s net connection, put them in the the DNS of the Laptop-2. And finally share the internet connection in the LAN of the Laptop-1. I know it sounds confusing. But it is the best way for you without spending anything, except your BRAIN. good Luck

My sister wants an external hardrive for her laptop for Chrismas….
My boss suggested this website, and it all says desktop external hardrives. But just wanted to check, they are OK for laptops.

My sister will only really be storing music and film and the occasional work thing. So do you think this one would be OK?

Thanks for advice and any tips!

Most external hard disks connect via USB. Some use Firewire (1394) and some eSATA. USB is by far the most common, and Firewire next most common.

Any external hard disk called "Desktop" will work fine with your sisters laptop as long as you buy one that uses a port type her laptop has. There are very few laptops that don’t have USB. You’re best bet is to make sure her laptop has USB and get a USB external hard disk.

Also, make sure the external disk supports USB-2.0 (sometimes called High Speed). There are still some USB-1 disks selling and they are so slow they will drive your sister crazy if she’s playing with audio and video files (large).

Some external disk require external power (plugs into an AC outlet). For a portable laptop application this can be annoying (in class or on a airplane. etc.). If it was me I’d get her one that doesn’t require external power.
