I don’t want my kids accessing the INTERNET through my neighbors unsecured router.
I Do Not want to go and talk to my neighbor to lock his router up?

I want a solution where i can prevent my kids from changing the wireless network settings of the computers

both the computers are windows XP

You would have to do quite a few things to make this happen. The easiet would be to setup accounts for them that are locked down accounts. You would create an administrator account that gives you only access to the configurations of windows. From the administrative account, you can allow or deny them access to certain aspects of windows.

Here is a brief tutorial

The other option is to connect to your neighbors wireless, find his printer, and print out a note telling him he needs to lock down his wireless. I have done that before

well i’m planning to get a laptop soon. and i just wanna know what is the difference between all these? because i went onto staple’s (the store) website and saw these 3…so what is the difference?

Desktop – Top of the desk PC- The usual PCs with separate CPU, separate Monitor, etc.

Laptop – Top of the lap PC- Portable PC

Netbook – Book like PC- Basically a PC that is a smaller and less performing version of a laptop, also about the size of usual books.

that came with the wireless box I just bought and it won’t connect. Both of the desktop computers in the office work fine, but I would like my laptop to be able to work wireless while at work also. Please try and explain to me how I can get this working?

Not enough info…
Are you even able to view wireless networks?
When you installed the disc for the wireless router, were you in port #1?
The disc that came with it is NO GOOD! do a manual setup. Put the default gateway ip address into a browser on one of the desktops. Login to your router, and setup the wireless security that way. If you run into any problems, press the reset button on the back of the router (you will need a paper clip).

Yes this is for school. However, I honestly can not think of any commonalities between notebooks and desktops. Please help!

They’re both computers? Why do teachers think of questions like these?

I really don’t know and it really confuses me!!!!!!!!!!!

desktops is the one with a tower and monitor, the laptop and notebooks are the portable computers.

:> peace
.

I just bought a laptop and a wireless router (it has an integrated wireless card inside of it). The router has a 4 port thingy on the back (sorry for the lack of technical terms here, lol). My roommate and I each have a desktop and both need to be hooked up to the internet from the desktops. Can we hook them up thru the wireless router? How do we do it and do we need any other additional equipment? We have one cable modem as well, where does that come into play?. Also do I need to "activate" the wireless function at all or is it just there already? I’m new to this if you can’t tell. :) Thanks!!
Thanks everyone- we aren’t planning on getting wireless cards for the desktops, we’ll just use cables.

Hi,

You have the perfect setup for wireless network connectivity, so let’s walk through this step by step.

1. If the router is in fact a wireless router, and not merely a switch, then any computer (desktop or laptop) that has a wireless network card can connect to the internet through that router. Of course , you can also hook up to 4 computers via the ethernet ports in the back of the computers to the router (that’s why it has 4 ports—yes, you used the right terms!) Also, you will need a modem, but the modem must match the connection you are using. If you connect by DSL, then you must use a DSL modem. If you connect by cable, then we will need your cable modem. If the house you live in is aready wired, then you will only need the wireless router. Also, each computer must have a network card, either wireless or wired.

So, here we go:

A: DSL
1. The modem and the router shoukld have some with instruct.ions and a CD. Follow those instructions EXACTLY—it ususally involves installing all the software before you even turn the router and the modem on.

2. Once you’ve followed all the instructiosn and turned on all the equipment, Connect the modem to the phone jack with your phone cord (Instead of connecting it to the phone)

2. Plug an ethernet cable from the modem to the router (these ports on the back of both the modem and the router will say "internet").

3. Plug any computers that will not be wireless into the router. They are now connected to the internet. For wireless computers, the wireless function will onny need to be "activated" if there is a wireless button on your laptop—it will look something like this: (( I )) . It you don’t see this button, the wireless is always "on".

4. Are you running Windows XP service Pack 2? If not, it will be difficult to set up the wireless connection. If you are, click on Start, Control Panel, then Network Connections. Look to the left, and you’ll see the words "View Wireless Connections". Click there.

5. This will bring up a new box, listing the names of wireless networks that you can connect your computer to. Look for the name of your network there (usually the name of your router). Click on it and click Connect. It will try to connect. If it asks for a network key, type in the key you were given when you were following the instructions to set up the router and modem.

6. Connect all your other computers the same way. A cable connection will work the same way, only you won’t use the phone cord, you’ll use the cable cord.

That’s alot to read (and type, believe me!) If you need further assistance, please just e-mail me.

Hope this is helpful!

The only companies that make quad core desktops that are affordable and iBuyPower and Velocity Micro. Velocity Micro is barely affordable. But quad core chips are $299 for a 2.4 GHZ chip, so cheap.

Nobody really wants to fry eggs on their desktops at this time.

Basically quad core is struggling massively with 2 things

1. As the first line in my answers suggests – they are hot little bunnies! In a commercial dataroom this isn’t much of an issue as they tend to be air conditioned and super cool anyway – at home in your bedroom under a desk they become a neat way of making an insurance claim.

2. Home software just isn’t designed to take advantage of even dual core in a big way let alone quad. The applications and OS need to know HOW to get at the additional processing power otherwise there really is just no performance advantage.
We’ll see them in time – but to be perfectly frank I would rather run a dual board with dual GPU than spend the money on quad cores

The pc that is supposed to use the printer wireless won’t connect to my printer. When it searches for printers in a network it comes up with the pc name of the computer that is plugged into the printer. Isn’t it supposed to come up with the name of the printer?

Try installing drivers on both computers.

The Evolution of Rpgs

The Evolution of RPGs

Role Playing Games or RPGs have been around since before computer desktops were readily available to homes. Remember board games? These table top RPGs were very popular until dice and paper were replaced by mouse and monitor. Modern RPGs, in fact, stemmed from table top war games. The most popular war game ever was Dungeons & Dragons. This game was created by Dave Arneson and Gary Gygax, who were both fans of JRR Tolkein’s Lord of the Rings series. DND was a war game involving small groups of mid-evil soldiers.

Video RPGs or electronic RPGs were introduced in 1972. Many people believe that the first computer RPG is ADVENTURE, a game created by William Crowther. The first ADVENTURE appeared on Ataris in 1980, wherein a player could control a group of warriors to try and slay a dragon. Wizardry 1 and Ultima 1 appeared on the Apple 2 in 1981. These games launched the RPG genre as players could navigate towns and crawl through dungeons to fight monsters. Video RPGs came out in 1986 when Enix’s Dragon Quest came out in Nintendo. The combat system of Dragon Quest set a standard that is still being used by VRPGs today. Another popular VRPG was Legend of Zelda created by Shigeru Miyamoto. But the most popular VRPG ever created was Final Fantasy which was released by Squaresoft in 1987. With more than 13 stories and games out in the market, Final Fantasy’s popularity is yet to be beaten.

1988 was the year computer RPGs made its debut into households. It was the same year that Dungeons and Dragons made its move into the digital world. DND was the first CRPG to offer optional quests for characters and the ability of players to strategically control character movement during combat. The players made a party of 6 characters based on DND rules. However, it was Dungeon Masters, that allowed mouse control giving the players ability to select objects and click on enemies for combat.

When discussing RPGs, one just has to mention Blizzard’s Diablo which was released in 1996. It proved to be one of the most popular CRPGs of all times. Because of the random dungeons and different character classes available to players, it encouraged players to play the game over and over again.

Multi User Dungeons or MUDs are actually text based games which provided character creation, optional quests and a storyline. MUDs are also called MUSH’s, MOO’s or TIKI’s and is the precursor to MMORPGs. These games were most of the time done by people who loved games and had enough knowledge about programming. MUDs soon lost its popularity to console and computer games with graphics.

It is believed that Meridian 59, which came out in 1996, was the first ever MMORPG released. But it was Ultima Online that popularized this genre in 1997. MMORPGs host a large number of players, who log in to the same world to play the game. The players need a client that allows them to log into the world, which continues to exist and change even when there are no players logged in. Everquest dominated the MMORPG genre for five years until World of Warcraft came into play. Because RPGs continue to flux, companies are continually working on to improve the game, by creating new zones, quests and character classes to keep the players interested.
