I have a desktop and I want to get a lab top. I’m not computer savvy so I want to know how I can get my files like iTunes and all my photos saved to the new lab top hard drive?

Short, sweet, and to the point answer:

Buy a flash drive, plug it into the computer, put as many files on it as it will hold, eject and plug into the laptop, drag all of the files out of the flash drive, format (to get rid of existing files on the flashdrive) plug back into your desktop, repeat.

I have worked with two magazine’s for work experience and there were only apple computers.

Just because design layout software is designed for Macs (QuarkxPress, Indesign), although it is available for PCs. Don’t be afraid of Macs, they’re easier to use than PCs & they look prettier!

im looking for something that will last a long time and runs really good, preferable a desktop and under $2,000, thanks

Example: I am using a laptop with no HDD and a USB Flash Drive as a storage device. There is a desktop computer nearby that has two HDD in it. Both are connected to the same internat connection via router. Is it possible for the laptop to use one of the desktop HDD for extra storage space like for programs/applications, etc.? How can this be accomplished? Wirelessly share a HDD?

No.

There are some scenarios where you could hookup an external HD via USB and it might work if the Bios allows ‘boot to external USB’.

What you probably don’t grasp is the fact that if it could use an external HD as your boot O/S drive, it would be very, very slow.
Do you know the difference in the transfer rate/access rate of a USB port compared to an onboard Sata connection?
And if you think USB vs Sata is slow, try transferring files over a wireless connection!

I bought a desktop computer (Assembled not branded) from Delhi last year. Every time i need to get it formatted or install a new version of windows. I have to pay 500.00 Rs. to the person from whom i bought it. I don not have drivers of the machine. Though i can arrange Win Bootable CD. How can i format it myself without drivers? Can i Download Drivers from some web location? Its Cor 2 Duo machine. Help required.

Try RadarSync, which is at "http://www.radarsync.com/". It is extreamly simple, plus they have a free (never ending trial), and a paid version. I have used it many times in the past.

the time warner modem is in another room. however the two computers will be in a different room, maybe 25 feet from each other. any info will be appreciated. thank you so much.

a router. u can use a cable or a wireless router. linksys makes them and many other companies. u have to determine first if the two computers have a wireless reception capability…. or at least one does. this capability is known as a WLAN. if none does u need to run a cable OR you can add this capability to either or both desktops for not much $$

I want to print from a laptop on a printer which is connecetd to a desktop computer. Both compuetrs use internet thru a the same wireless router which is connected to cable connection. Can some body tell me how I can achieve that.

You’d have to identify the printer attached to the desktop as a SHARED printer on the desktop first.
Then you can install the printer drivers on your laptop.
It WILL make your desktop perform slower however, because now it’s having to be a Print Server as well as a workstation.

If the printer is networkable…that would be a better way for both to access it without a penalty. Just hook it into your router.

I’d like to be able to hook both computers on the screen at the same time and switch from viewing one computer to the next with a click of a button. Is this possible? How do I make this happen?

You need a KVM switch, but you need to check the capabilities and connections properly before buying one.

In the past it was a requirement that every important application (e.g. web server, file and print server, database server) that companies relied on was installed on its own independent piece of hardware. The reason for this was that if the application crashed and brought the server down the other applications on the server would not be affected.

Over the years servers have continued to develop and become more powerful. These developments coupled with some nifty software lets us run many computers inside one computer or server i.e. Virtualization.

Each computer that is running inside of the main server is called a virtual machine and each virtual machine is independent of the other virtual machines running on the same server.

Being able to run many computers inside of one computer or server can offer businesses many benefits in today’s competitive environment and helps to give companies the edge over their competitors. Some of these advantages are:

Massive savings in power, hardware and administration costs as businesses no longer require one server for one application, thus the shear volume of servers a business requires can be dramatically cut.

Every virtual machine is independent of the hardware it is running on. This is possible because each virtual machine is essentially a large file and can easily be moved from one location to another.  Transferring these files can be achieved over the internet, saving it on a hard disk or even on a USB key. Once the file is in the new location it can be installed as a new virtual machine.

This process of moving the virtual machine can happen very fast over the internet. This lets us: (a) Move virtual machines off our servers for hardware maintenance (b) Move our virtual machines to more powerful servers as needs require. This could be during busy periods or if the demand has risen.

It is important to note that virtualization is not limited to servers. Many companies are now running a virtual machine for every employee that is working in their company. This virtual machine is then configured in one central site and the employee connects to the virtual machine using a standard PC, Laptop or a thin client.

The advantages of desktop virtualization are increased security; reduced hardware costs and a reduction in the management time required.
