My computers are all successfully sharing a dsl internet connection via a wireless router. But I can’t figure out how to get them to see each other on a file sharing network, What am I missing? No single computer can see any other computers, but they can all use the dsl connection. What gives? I’ve networked the old fashioned way before so what am I missing?

The faster/easier way to get from one computer to another is to just go to start>run, type \computername, hit ok, and it will show all the shared files/printers avaliable on that computer.

If you would really like to go the long browsing way just make sure each computer is in the same workgroup here:
rightclick on my computer and go to properties
go to computer name
click change
enter your workgroup name/make sure it is correct
hit ok on everything (including restart)
All of the computers should now appear in the same workgroup in my network places.

I recently bought a windows vista operating system disc, and i was wondering if i can install that same disc to multiple computers?

if its original then only 1
if its not then as many as u wish

hope this helps u ^_^

My computer is wirelessly connected to a 2wire dsl modem to Century tel internet acess, the computer that is connected physically has a hp photosmart c5280 printer attached to it, how do I configure the two computers so I can print from the wirelessly connected computer, or is that possible? How does printer sharing work?

printer sharing is done over a network. the software to create a simple network is built into Windows XP (and earlier versions).

i’m not familiar with your hardware and so I don’t know if it includes or functions as a switch … you need a switch function to route info (print data) from one computer to the other.

oh

I have high speed internet through my phone company (zoomtown) I just bought a new computer and am giving my old computer to my brother. How to I hook both computers to the internet. Do I need to get another box for the old computer from the phone company, or do I need to to set up a wireless network on my own?

You can connect as many computers as you want.

The "box" you refer to is the high-speed modem. That’s the device that is directly connected to your ISP, and is the ONLY device directly connected.

This modem is called your "gateway" to the internet.

When you connect a single computer to the internet, you use an ethernet cable to connect your computer to the modem, which has a single ethernet port.

However, if you have more than one computer, you can plug what’s called a "hub" to the modem instead, and then plug your computers into the hub.

Most hubs have 4 ports, but you can get them with 6 or 10, and even more if you look around.

If you have more computers than you have ports, you can plug another hub into the first hub. This is called "daisy chaining".

Suppose you had 5 computers. and let’s also suppose you happen to have two 4-port hubs.

You would plug a hub into the gateway. This gives you 4 ports to the connection.

Now you would plug 3 computers into the hub.

In the 4th port, you would plug another hub.

Now you can connect the other 2 computers to this second hub.

If you get more computers, this process can be repeated.

This is the simplest workable method.

There CAN be problems if all the computers are being used at the same time using this method. These particular problems can be solved using a router, but that gets a little more complex.

I’ve connected 3 computers at a time using a single 4-port hub with no problems.

I have 4 computers at home , all are connected via Wireless lan to a Linksys router .
Is it possible that i can enter to other computer on my home network to repair some configuration , etc… ?
How to do that ?

Load each computer with one of the free VNC programs like TightVNC or UltraVNC.
Install VNC server as a service on each of the machines you want to support. Load VNC viewer on your machine. Reboot all machines

Now when you need to "reach out and touch" one if the other machines, fire up VNC viewer, enter the local IP address for the machine, enter the password you created when you set up the machine, and you are in

You have complete remote control of the machine and can see the desktop of the machine on yours.

Have fun

The host computer and one of the computers "see" each other just fine via ethernet cables. I can exchange data through the "shared docs" folders from both. I just connected a third computer via an ethernet cable, and it’s connecting to the internet just fine from the host, but I can’t "see" the shared docs folders on the other two computers from the third computer, or see the third computer from the others. What am I forgetting to do? Thanks!

Make sure the "workgroup" name is the same on all machines and enable network discovery and file sharing on all the machines and it’s better to have them all use the same router… You can also share printers, scanners, etc…

GOOD LUCK !!!

I saw that these days laptops don’t have that much of a difference from computers with their CPUs, so why would people buy a computer these days? Why do you own a desktop?

Desktops have several advantages over laptops:

1- No battery. Even when plugged into an outlet, a laptop’s power is coming from the battery. If the battery is entirely defunct than the laptop may not function even when plugged in. This goes back to the old engineering addage "the more parts there are, the more there is to go wrong."
2- Laptops are harder to service/upgrade. Space, heat, and power consumption are all critical factors in a laptop. Most (98%) of desktops can upgrade a video card with no problem in any of the aforementioned 3 areas. Simply because a laptop is compatible with a graphics card does not mean that it will cool the card efficiently enough for reliable operation.
3- Cost! Desktops offer more computing power at a lower cost. This is due to several factors including space, power consumption, cooling capacity, and ease of design. Laptops are also constructed to a higher standard because it is likely that they will be moving around while turned on. Desktops do not require this as most people set it on their desk and never move it unless it needs service.
4- More ports and drives. Desktops come with a DVD/CD drive as a standard and many will come with a second one so you can copy discs easily. Most desktops will have at least 2 USB ports in the front and anywhere from 2-8 in the back. Laptops come with a single disc drive (if it comes with one at all). In addition, laptops will typically have 2-4 USB ports total.
5- Screen quality. With a laptop, the screen attached to the computer is likely the only one you will ever use. While you can attach a monitor, most people don’t do this. Desktop screens are not constrained by the stringent power requirements of a laptop and usually offer higher resolutions, more HD capable models, lower prices, and better response times (which reduces the "ghost" effect).

Why Computers and Networks?

Computers have become a necessity for all types of working environment. No matter what type of work you are doing, computers can help you in maximizing your work efficiency. Due to this fact computers are being used in all types of offices. Some areas like banking, insurance, stock exchange as well as reservation systems completely rely on use of Computers and Internet.

In a computing environment people need inter connectivity of computers to share resources like (files and data). It further helps in use and management of information collected through various nodes. These kinds of network that is being implemented in a particular organization are known as Intranets. Intranet helps in information sharing between different offices of same organization at different locations. It works on LAN (Local Area Network), MAN (Metropolitan Area Network) or WAN (Wide Area Network). There are mainly three ways of implementing different type of networks – wired, wireless or mixed (wired and wireless both as and when required).

Why Internet?

Internet is information superhighway, one of the major and accurate sources of getting information on any topic quickly. It is also used as backbone for implementing Intranet. Company’s websites and email are completely dependent on Internet. In brief, internet is the most important and fastest medium of communication in current hi-tech world.

Network Related Problems

As an end user you must have experienced various types of problems in your network during your work. Due to network downtime organizations have to bear loss of several productive working hours or in turn loss of revenue. Network downtime for your web servers may result unavailability of your website, in that case your potential viewers may not find required information through your website. It may create a negative impact of your company/organization or business

To deal with such problems immediately organizations need network diagnosis and maintenance experts to fix such problems to further reduce loss of productive working hours. However, it is not possible for every organization to hire a fulltime team of networking experts to solve their network issues. They prefer to rely upon network security consultants, who help them whenever needed. It’s a cost-effective alternative for organizations because they don’t have to hire full time professionals for taking care of their network troubleshooting needs.
