Setting Up Your Trading Room

A trading room is an area that is specifically set aside and equipped for your trading.  This article is about how you can setup your own trading room.

One day I went inside a bank’s trading room.  They had specially designed desks to hold trading screens.  They had special telephone systems and direct data feeds.  Everything was designed to make it as easy as possible for the traders to work.

You don’t need to go to the same extent, but your equipment and working environment shouldn’t hold you back either.  It is difficult to trade properly if your computer struggles with the data, or constantly crashes, or your connection keeps dropping out, or if your work area is hot, cold or dusty.

Ideally you should have an area set aside specifically for trading.  It may be a study or home office.  It shouldn’t be a children’s play area or in a busy passageway.  It needs to be comfortable and well lit and equipped with power sockets to keep all wires neat and orderly, not all tangled.

You need a comfortable ergonomic chair, and plenty of desk space, with all the equipment you need to hand.  There should be storage areas so that you can put away items that you are not using to keep it uncluttered.

A computer is essential for trading.  You need a system that is as fast and new as possible.  The cut down budget computer won’t be enough.  You need a lot of memory, a big hard drive to store historical data, a fast CPU to help with your backtesting, and a large display screen.  You should consider dual monitors to extend your on screen work area.

The current generation of notebook computers are a good option, provided you buy one with enough power.  The benefit is that if you want to travel, you can take your trading platform with you.  You’ll need to setup your trading platform, together with other packages you may need such MetaTrader or Excel.

You don’t need to buy a Windows PC.  A Mac can run all Windows trading software using virtualisation.  Just remember to install plenty of memory.  A Mac can also run any web based or Java based trading platforms.

The computer should ideally be kept for trading.  If you have other people playing games on it, installing and uninstalling software, it will make your trading platform less stable.  If other people are using your trading computer, you will be concerned about your trades, especially if you are relying on automated trading software on the computer.

You’ll need a fast Internet connection.  It should be reliable and stable.  If possible, you should have a backup connection, such as wireless broadband, which you can also use if you are traveling.  If you have power issues in your area, you should have a UPS for both your computer and the Internet connection.

Every great trader has a trading library – you can include it in your trading room.

Good luck in your trading and with setting up your trading room.

Laptops are more affordable then ever. Prices have dropped enough to make laptops available to most consumers who need a mobile computer for school, work or personal use. Even though they are more affordable, buying a laptop is still a major investment. One way to soften the financial blow is by purchasing a used or refurbished laptop from either a private seller, a retail vendor or a liquidator who is clearing out off-lease laptops. While the price may be lower, there are many things consumers must learn before buying a used laptop. Shoppers must: know the seller, know the products, and know where to buy.

Know the Seller

There are only three types of used or refurbished laptop sellers: retailers, private sellers, or scammers. It’s imperative to know from whom you are buying because that determines how you approach the buying process. You deal with a private seller very differently from an online retailer. Of course, if the online merchant is a reputable e-commerce site (some examples listed below), then you shouldn’t need to worry about this, but there are some great deals to be found online if you stay educated and wander outside the standard computer stores. There are several red flags to watch out for when determining with whom you are dealing (and if you should deal with them at all!):

-Check the feedback. Is there a feedback system on the site? If the seller seems to be a merchant, do they have consistent track record providing the product you want to purchase? If the seller seems to be an individual, do they have more than one model for sale? It would be unusual for a private seller should to have more than one model for sale at a time – if they do, be suspicious.

-Check the payment method. Are the payment terms odd or inconvenient? Do they only accept Western Union? (Never send money via WU to someone you don’t know. There is no recourse if you have trouble, and scammers know this!)

-Check the seller’s location. If the seller is international, this shouldn’t be an immediate red flag, but if they are international and offer free shipping, this is a major red flag. This wouldn’t be cost efficient for anyone but a scammer.

-Check the photos. Are there any actual photos of the laptop? Generally, a scammer doesn’t have the actual product in hand to take photos, but keep in mind that they can easily swipe photos from a personal website. The absence of real product photos does not indicate a scam, but it should be considered as a part of the bigger picture.

-Check the time. Is the seller in a major hurry? Is it a 2-day auction? Legitimate sellers can also be a in a hurry, but if you feel that the seller is really rushing, make sure to take this into account.

-Check the deal. You know what they always say: “If it sounds too good to be true…” I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but totally unbelievable deals are just that – not believable.

Bottom line: If you feel suspicious, listen to your gut. A private seller that is trying to come off as a retailer will probably have holes in their story that you can expose by checking for red flags. A private seller trying to scam you probably won’t have their ducks in a row well enough to pull off a swindle on an educated consumer.

Know the Products.

There is a difference between a used laptop and a refurbished (reconditioned, remanufactured) laptop. A used laptop is just that – used by another person for a certain period of time and now it needs a new home. Perhaps the seller has cleaned up the notebook for sale, erased the hard drives, and gathered up all the original manuals and packaging, but it’s possible he has done none of that. Refurbished, on the other hand, usually describes a notebook that has been returned to the manufacturer, repaired, cleaned-up, repackaged, and sent out with a short warranty period attached. These laptops are generally sold by an online retailer, so you often have the security of knowing you may be able to hold them accountable for problems (though you can’t be sure of this – check their specific policies). Of course, ‘refurbs’ also come with a higher price tag, but you pay for that added security. It’s possible that a refurbished system will have some light surface scratches, but most often you can’t even tell that the unit was ever used.

Some things to keep in mind when shopping for a used (not refurbished) laptop:

-You will probably need to buy a new battery. There are specific draining and charging procedures for laptop batteries. Chances are that the seller did not always follow these procedures (does anyone?). Make sure to account for the price of a new battery when you are shopping so you aren’t hit with an unexpected after-purchase cost.

-You really have no idea what that laptop has been through. Laptops were created to be mobile. You really don’t (and can’t) know how many times that laptop was dropped, spilled on, walked on, etc. While the seller is obligated to disclose any known defects, you can’t be certain to you are hearing the whole story. These undisclosed accidents could cause you problems down the line.

-Expect some scratches. With movement comes scratches, so depending upon the age, expect a certain amount of wear and tear. If you are prepared for this, you won’t be as disappointed. If it doesn’t affect the performance of the computer, try not to worry about it.

Know Where to Buy.

While you can scour any laptop-related site for potential for sale ads, you also end up wasting a great deal of time that way! Instead, there are a handful of high-traffic websites out there that consistently have used laptops and refurbished laptops for sale. Here are a few:

http://ebay.com

http://overstock.com

http://tigerdirect.com/applications/overstock/

http://techdepot.com/clearance.asp

http://notebookforums.com/forum25.html

If you are in the market for a used or refurbished laptop, you should take some time to get familiar with market conditions and the systems that tend to become available. If you are researching on Ebay, watch some auctions to see how the bidding goes. Get very comfortable with used laptop pricing before you get emotionally attached to any one system. If you are shopping in a more retail environment, like TigerDirect.com, you won’t need to watch prices change like an auction, but the inventory changes often and if you don’t see what you want there now, keep checking back. Make sure to check return policies on refurbished systems to avoid any possible buyer’s remorse.

Used and refurbished laptops provide an excellent opportunity to get a nice laptop at a very nice price. While the prices are much easier to swallow than new units, buying used does come with a certain set of risks. Education is power here (and money in your pocket, in the case of a scam), so stay ahead of the game and don’t rush into any to-good-to-be-true deal without making sure you know what you are getting. If you do your due diligence, you should end up with a quality system for a fraction of the new price.

Billion Dollar Animation Industry

The Second Golden Age of Animation is creating enormous revenues from both box office gross to billions of dollars in sales generated by all manner of kids’ products spinning off from Intellectual Properties aimed at the kiddy market, products that range from the bizarre (Spongebob) to the sublime (Harry Potter).

When was the First Golden Age of Animation? This was a period in American animation history beginning in 1928 that began with the introduction of sound cartoons. It continued into the early 1960s when the introduction of this new medium of television animation drew audiences away from cinemas. It was during these years that an impressive number of Animation Properties came into being; such characters as Tom and Jerry, Superman, Woody Woodpecker, Felix the Cat as well as a huge range of Disney characters.

Walt Disney’s first films; Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Bambi came into being during this era.

What then is the Second Golden Age of Animation? It is happening today. Traditional animation, called cell animation, had been the standard since the 1920’s. Very labor intensive, cell animation was the backbone of the Disney corporation production facility and other companies such as Hanna Barbera. The introduction of computers, while slow to take hold, has completely changed the face of animation production taking animation from two dimensional characters to three dimensional images that are more realistic, easier to manipulate and store and most importantly, are the backbone of the huge video gaming market.

Animated films have far outstripped other genres in home video and DVD sales in the last fifteen years with retail dollars now capturing 32% of total sales, far ahead of second place comedy at 20% according to the Producer To Producer Book, 2nd Edition. In recent years, the licensing and merchandising industry driven by animated television series targeted at children has performed beyond most industry expectations. An excellent case in point, the children’s craze, Pokemon, surpassed accumulated worldwide sales of $10.0 Billion by 2001. Licensing and Merchandising revenues are expected to exceed $100 Billion annually by the year 2010 fueled by such monster hits as Shrek 2 – $881 Million Dollars, Finding Nemo – $865 Million and The Incredibles – $624 Million to name just three.

The target market for children’s television and films is the 50 million plus 4 – 12 year old North American kids whose buying power for toys, games and puzzles was approximately U.S.$13.4 billion per year in the nineties and now in excess of $200 Billion a year. The secondary markets are Europe, Asia and the Pacific region where North American companies have traditionally experienced success with many movie driven properties.

Kids buying power grew 12% over the 90’s and is expected to continue at a double digit growth rate well into the 2000’s. So dramatic was this growth of the Kids market that marketers dubbed the 90’s as the “Decade of the Child”.  In response to this phenomenon, more and more toys, clothes, food and entertainment products are being developed for this huge and growing market.  The companies involved in producing children’s live and animated productions have now identified this Kid’s market as the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow and now team up with toy companies and other manufacturers to exploit this lucrative ancillary market with an unimaginable number of products ranging from downloadable clips for cell phones to video games to social networking websites.

Computer generated films are now the driving force behind the enormous jump in sales of toys, electronic games and the multitude of other products aimed at the kid and tween market. items.

What does the future hold in this new Golden Age of Animation? Producers, manufacturers, distributors and kids are always on the lookout for that next new product. What will that be? As usual, it’s anybody’s guess. Who would have thought that some years ago, adults would be fist fighting over something called Cabbage Patch Dolls? Whatever the next hit is, it will no doubt be spawned from the depths of a computer chip.

In the past it was a requirement that every important application (e.g. web server, file and print server, database server) that companies relied on was installed on its own independent piece of hardware. The reason for this was that if the application crashed and brought the server down the other applications on the server would not be affected.

Over the years servers have continued to develop and become more powerful. These developments coupled with some nifty software lets us run many computers inside one computer or server i.e. Virtualization.

Each computer that is running inside of the main server is called a virtual machine and each virtual machine is independent of the other virtual machines running on the same server.

Being able to run many computers inside of one computer or server can offer businesses many benefits in today’s competitive environment and helps to give companies the edge over their competitors. Some of these advantages are:

Massive savings in power, hardware and administration costs as businesses no longer require one server for one application, thus the shear volume of servers a business requires can be dramatically cut.

Every virtual machine is independent of the hardware it is running on. This is possible because each virtual machine is essentially a large file and can easily be moved from one location to another.  Transferring these files can be achieved over the internet, saving it on a hard disk or even on a USB key. Once the file is in the new location it can be installed as a new virtual machine.

This process of moving the virtual machine can happen very fast over the internet. This lets us: (a) Move virtual machines off our servers for hardware maintenance (b) Move our virtual machines to more powerful servers as needs require. This could be during busy periods or if the demand has risen.

It is important to note that virtualization is not limited to servers. Many companies are now running a virtual machine for every employee that is working in their company. This virtual machine is then configured in one central site and the employee connects to the virtual machine using a standard PC, Laptop or a thin client.

The advantages of desktop virtualization are increased security; reduced hardware costs and a reduction in the management time required.

Spyware Versus Adware

Have you ever had pop up after pop up on your computer screen? Or have you ever seen it happen on someone else’s? This is something that is happening everyday. What is it? It is either Adware or Spyware.

What is Spyware?

Spyware is a program that monitors or spies on what computer users do on their computers. They then send the information that is gathered over the internet back to companies. The companies then bombard computers with advertisements.

What is Adware?

Adware is a program that monitors or spies on what computer users do on their computers. They then automatically install advertisements onto the computer.

Spyware and Adware: What is the difference?

You may be thinking that the definitions of spyware and adware sound very similar. They are similar indeed. The only difference between the two is that adware does not report to the company, instead it bypasses that and automatically loads the ads onto the computer.

So, what’s the big deal? Spyware and adware are taking computers over. The more adware or spyware that is loaded onto the computer, the longer it takes for the machine to go through its start up process. New toolbars appear in the browser. The homepage is changed and cannot be changed back. Pop-ups will not go away when the computer is running. It can slow your machine and your level of productivity down.

Isn’t Spyware and Adware just a way to advertise?

Spyware and Adware are an effort to advertise. Think about it this way though. Do you want to be spied on? That is exactly what is happening. Every move you make on your computer is watched, and then based on your computer activity, you receive pop-up ads. Now, ask yourself this question ‘If you are watching television, do you have to watch the commercials?’ No, of course not. You can choose whether you want to watch the ads, flip to a different channel or turn the television off. Okay, now, if you are driving down the road are you required to look at the billboards? No, you can completely ignore them. Advertising in and of itself is not a bad thing. It becomes a negative thing when people are forced to watch, see or read the advertisements. That is what happens with adware and spyware. The harder you try to eliminate the pop-ups, the more pop-ups you have to deal with. The simple truth is that it’s not really fair to force people to watch advertising.

What do the companies that make the Spyware and Adware say?

You might wonder about the response from the companies who create such products. They say that all they are doing is advertising. They are actually the ones who coined the term adware. Spyware was coined in order to get people’s attention and alert them to what spyware was doing to their computers. In an effort to redeem themselves, the companies created the adware that does not “spy” in that it does not report the computer activity to someone, but instead automatically installs the advertisement. They said that adware is simply to advertise and that some people just do not like advertisements. They claim that their software is legitimate.

So, is the software legitimate?

Well, let’s take a look at what these companies do. Many will install root kits in an effort to adware files so that the computer user does not find them. If it is legitimate then why do they need to hide the files? Adware often puts more than one file into the memory. Then, if one process is canceled out, another can kick in and restart it. If the files are changed, then they are changed back. If it is legitimate then why do the companies take such extreme measures to make it hard for you to remove their software? The adware takes over the computer by displaying pop-up after pop-up after pop-up. The pop-ups become so numerous that no matter how many you close you can not get them to go away because closing them causes more to open. The software causes bogs up the computer memory and eventually causes the computer to crash. If computers are crashing due to the software, then is this really legitimate?

What You Can Do About It

I cannot stop the companies from loading the adware and spyware by myself. You can not stop them from loading the software by yourself either. However, together we can inform people what spyware and adware is. Then, we all need to take a stand against it.

The computer revolution of the last ten years has radically changed the tools available for individual content creators. I recently spent an hour talking to Vicki Silbert of Bittybox, who recorded much of her indie album “Smalltime” in her home studio. I wanted to know what can really be accomplished these days with home recording, and can an indie project come anywhere close to the quality big budget recordings?

Indie Joe: Just to set the groundwork for this discussion, maybe you should tell us briefly about the Bittybox project?

Vicki Silbert: Sure… I had been through the whole band experience in the 1980’s. We played the Los Angeles club scene for 6 years, but we never had much opportunity to record. Years later I was making my living on the Macintosh computer and it occurred to me that maybe there was software for recording music. So I looked into that and sure enough there was! This was the start of Bittybox, I made a decision to learn about digital audio recording software and finally record an album.

I.J.: So you had no previous experience recording?

V.S.: Well, my band had been in the studio a couple of times. We recorded a pretty good single, and another time we spent way too much money to record a bad demo, but that was in the days of 24 track tape. We also did some 4 track cassette recording with a Fostex X-15. Don’t know if you’re old enough to remember those? Strangely enough we were happier with the X-15 recordings than when we paid a bunch of money to record with a producer. I guess it was partly that experience that led me try home recording. But no, I had no previous experience with recording on the computer, and I was certainly not an engineer. I didn’t even know what midi was at the time!

I.J.: How did you get started?

V.S.: I got on the internet and researched the different programs for audio recording. When you’re totally new to something it can be pretty confusing, and you don’t really have much to base a decision on. Ultimately I chose Digital Performer Software, mainly because of the Motu-Mac Mailing List. It’s a mailing list of Digital Performer users who network and help each other with the program. It looked like a great resource, which is what it turned out to be!

I.J.: At that early stage did you think you would record a project for commercial release, or were you just experiementing?

V.S.: I always had the idea that I would record the album I had always wanted to release. I was actually way over-optimistic about how long it would take me to finish. I thought I would have a CD to release in 6 months, but it actually took me years!

I.J.: How many years?

V.S.: Don’t ask! I think I made pretty much every mistake in the book that home recordists make. I was working primarily with samplers and didn’t really know what was possible. So I spent endless hours programming drum tracks, all of which got thrown away in the end. Also the recording software is very deep and there are endless technical challenges and a huge learning curve. You have no idea when you start, what you’re getting into. Truthfully if I had any clue I probably wouldn’t have even tried!

I.J.: All the drum tracks got thrown out! How much of the stuff you recorded at home got used in the final album?

V.S.: I think maybe about half of my programmed tracks got used. We kept all the keyboard parts. Most of the programmed horn parts are still there under the one real horn part, there’s some programmed cello under what Novi Novog played on viola, one or two of the programmed bass parts got used, and some of the scratch vocals I recorded at home got used. Also a couple of my guitar parts made it onto the final CD but mostly it’s Ken Lasaine on guitar.

I.J.: Was this because the parts weren’t good enough or the recording quality wasn’t good enough?

V.S.: I really didn’t understand to what degree getting some live players would contribute to the final sound of the CD until after I started down that path. What really turned me away from trying to finish by myself was how long it was taking me. I started trying to record guitar parts, and realized that at the rate I was working the album would never get finished. I had played guitar back when I had my band, but hadn’t really kept up with it, so it was really a struggle for me. Once I got into the studio with some session players, it was like a huge weight lifted.

I.J.: So what do you think about the question of whether a home recording can stand up to the big budget projects?

V.S.: I’m sure there are people out there who have the skills that would allow them to do that successfully. It would be different for a band that just wants to make a record of the songs they play live, as opposed to a solo project like mine where all the parts had to be created from scratch. But unless someone involved has an audio engineering background it would be pretty hard to do a completely professional job in a home studio.

At least in my case, the decision to use some session players and an engineer in a real studio made a huge difference in the final outcome. And even so there are things that could have been better, but at some point you have to stick a fork in it…both because of the expense and because you totally burn out after a while. You just want to be done with it!

So in the end my “Smalltime” CD is about half home recording with samplers and half in the studio with real players. At least in this case that turned out to be a nice balance.

I.J.: Well thanks for taking the time to chat about the project!

V.S.: Yeah, you bet! Thanks for writing about it!

For homes with multiple PCs, TV programs can be broadcast on all the computers, providing these are in a network. Factor in wireless routers and laptops and you end up with the ultimate in portable, mobile TV programming. High on features and low on cost.
